That’s what Chloe texted me from college the other day. The reason?

She had to go to a German conversation class with some second years. New things = scary. Second years to her as a first year – scary.

All last week, since she found out, she had been worrying about it. Focusing on how scary it would be. Getting herself more and more wound up. 20 minutes before it started, she texted me ‘I’M SCARED!’.

So I reassured her, as you do and told her she had to go (in case she was attempting an escape) and I heard nothing from her for an hour and a half.

At which point she called saying she was finished and could we collect her. “How was it?” I asked. “Not as bad as I thought” she said.

When she got home I could tell she was really proud of herself because she had managed OK and had even joined in. She’s not worried about next week.

It rarely is as bad as we expect and even when it is as bad, or even worse, we cope. And next time around, it’s usually not as scary. It definitely gets less scary, the more you do it whether it’s German conversation classes with second years or videos for marketing your business.

Keep doing the scary things till they are not scary any more.

Love, Claire xx
