Do you want to know my favourite TV programme? It’s not about business. I don’t watch Dragon’s Den, or Strictly or Bake Off or MAFS. Nope, my favourite programme that I wait all week for and really miss in between seasons is…Homestead Rescue!
It’s about a family of homestead ‘fixers’ called the Raineys – there’s Dad, Marty, daughter Misty and son Matt. (Mum Mollee, daughter Melanee and other son Matt make occasional appearances.) They go to failing homesteads and fix them. They sort out water and food and power and anything else they can fit into 7 days.
Yes, it’s as corny as it sounds. Marty is a BIG personality, I want to BE Misty and even though it’s cheese on wheels, I still love it.
I love the way they tackle issues. I love seeing the weird and wonderful ‘fixes’. I love the problem solving. And yes I know lots of it is staged for TV but I don’t care. Even my husband says ‘what would Marty do?’ for comedy effect when we’re faced with a BIG problem.
The real answer is Marty would use a chainsaw and ‘homestead engineering’ which mostly isn’t legal in the UK. Do you know why I really love it though? Because it makes me think differently.
From how to build a greenhouse that won’t blow away, to a watering system for the chickens, to our home-made coal bunker – none of it is stuff you’d find in text books, it’s all my version of ‘homestead engineering’ – in other words, it’s not perfect but it does the job and it works great for us.
And it made me think of you. Instead of letting the ‘textbook’ way keep you stuck, try the ‘homestead engineering’ approach and find a way that works for you, even if it’s not perfect.
Love, Claire xx
