There is a rat in my greenhouse. It might be a squirrel, but it’s probably a rat. It’s dug under one of my raised beds, there’s a pile of soil and shredded cardboard that we put down to line it.

My gardener, Steve, asked if I wanted to put a trap down. He hates rats.

Here’s the thing:

  • I believe everything has to live somewhere.
  • It’s not in my house (or near my house).
  • We live on a river bank so we always have lots of wildlife, including rats.
  • Rats are intelligent little beings with bad press.
  • I actually sponsor a rat with Apopo Foundation, who use the most amazing rats to detect land mines and diseases like TB.
  • So, the answer is no.
  • It’s not going to harm anything over the winter, there’s nothing for it to eat in there.
  • In the spring I’ll be pulling out and refilling that raised bed so Ratty will move out.

What I WILL do, though, is set up my wildlife camera in the greenhouse and verify what it is, and where it’s getting in and out of the greenhouse so I can seal it up.

Why am I telling you this?

People see things differently, depending on their personal experience and circumstances.

My view of rats is probably very different to yours. It’s definitely different to Steve’s.

Heck, even my view might be different if it was in my house, rather than my greenhouse.

And it made me think of you and your lovely business.

Perception is relative. You can’t please everyone. You can’t appeal to everyone. Market to the people with the same worldview as you and they are much more likely to buy.

Love, Claire xx
