You’ve decided to start sending email newsletters – brilliant plan! Email marketing is a fantastic tool that builds relationships, positions you as an expert, and keeps you top of mind so that when your subscriber is ready to buy, they buy from YOU.
My email newsletter helped me build a six-figure business. I’m a huge advocate and I really want you to use it in yours.
But before you jump in with both feet, here are 5 tips to make sure it actually works for you.
1. Define What You Want From It
What do you actually want your newsletter to DO? Drive people to your website? Get them to book a call? Buy a product? Reply to your email?
If you don’t know, don’t bother sending it – it’s a waste of your precious time. Get clear on the outcome first.
Practical tip: Every single email you send should have ONE clear goal and ONE clear call-to-action button or link. Don’t confuse people with five different things to click.
2. Write It For ONE Person
The best newsletters feel like a message from a friend, not a corporate announcement. Write as if you’re talking to one specific person – your ideal customer.
Aim for that “OMG she’s talking to ME!” moment. When you get THAT reaction, that’s when people realise you’re a perfect fit – and that’s when they buy.
Practical tip: Write your emails in first person, use “you” a lot, and keep paragraphs short. Think WhatsApp message, not essay. Platforms like Flodesk and ConvertKit make it easy to create gorgeous, simple email templates that feel personal.
3. Show Them You’re The Solution
People buy solutions to their problems. Show them how you make their life easier, save them money, help them grow – whatever amazing thing you do.
Don’t make them guess. Tell them how you can help.
Practical tip: Share mini case studies, quick wins, and before-and-after stories. Nothing sells like proof that you’ve helped someone just like them.
4. Include A Clear Call To Action
Don’t rely on people being mind-readers! If you want them to click through to your shop, TELL THEM. If you want them to book a discovery call, say it clearly and give them a link to your Calendly or booking page.
Every email needs a clear next step.
5. Be Consistent (This Is The One Most People Get Wrong)
Sporadic newsletters are almost as bad as no newsletters. The key to email marketing that sells is CONSISTENCY.
Decide on your frequency and stick to it. Why? Because if you go quiet, your subscribers don’t stop needing what you sell – they just buy it from someone who DID show up in their inbox that week.
Practical tip: Batch your content. Set aside one morning to write 4 emails, schedule them in Mailchimp, MailerLite or Flodesk, and you’re sorted for the month. Use AI tools like ChatGPT or Claude to help you brainstorm ideas and draft outlines when you’re stuck.
