If you’ve got an email list (and if you haven’t, we need to talk), you might be staring at a blank screen wondering what on earth to write in your newsletter this week.
I get it. Coming up with fresh content every week can feel like pulling teeth. But here’s the thing – your newsletter doesn’t have to be a massive essay. It doesn’t have to take hours. And it definitely doesn’t have to be boring.
Here are 17 ideas to get you started. Pick one, write it, send it. Done.
Content That Helps
1. A quick tip they can use today. One practical thing. That’s it. Something they can do in the next 10 minutes that will make a difference to their business or life.
2. Answer a question you get asked a lot. If one person is asking it, dozens more are thinking it.
3. Share a mistake you made (and what you learned). People love honesty. And they learn more from your mistakes than your successes.
4. A step-by-step how-to. Walk them through something specific. “How to write a social media post that actually gets engagement” is more useful than “social media tips”.
5. Bust a myth. What do people in your industry get wrong? Set the record straight.
Content That Connects
6. Behind the scenes. Show them what your day looks like. People are nosy (in the nicest way) and they want to know who they’re buying from.
7. A personal story. Something that happened to you that relates to your business or your audience. Keep it real.
8. What you’re reading, watching, or listening to. A book recommendation, a podcast you love, a TV show you’re obsessed with. It makes you human.
9. A photo of something from your week. Your dog, your lunch, your messy desk, your view. With my rescue chickens, I’m never short of material.
10. Celebrate a win. Yours or a client’s. People love a good news story.
Content That Sells (Without Being Salesy)
11. A client story or testimonial. Let someone else do the selling for you. Share what they achieved and how.
12. A “did you know” about your product or service. Something they might not realise you offer or a feature they might not know about.
13. An exclusive offer just for subscribers. Make them feel special for being on your list. A discount, early access, or a freebie.
14. Answer “why should I buy from you?” Not in a braggy way. Just honestly explain what makes you different.
Content That’s Easy
15. Curate other people’s content. Share three great articles or resources you’ve found this week. Add a line about why each one is worth reading.
16. Run a poll or ask a question. “What’s your biggest marketing challenge right now?” People love giving their opinion and you get free market research.
17. Repurpose something. Turn a blog post into a newsletter. Turn a social media post into a longer email. Turn a client question into a tip. You don’t have to create everything from scratch.
The Most Important Thing
Just send it. An imperfect newsletter that lands in someone’s inbox is better than the perfect one that’s still sitting in your drafts. Your subscribers signed up because they want to hear from you. So talk to them like you’d talk to a friend over a cuppa.
And if you’re not sure where to start, pick number 3 (share a mistake) and number 1 (a quick tip). That’s two weeks sorted right there.
Never miss a thing
Marketing tips, real business stories and the occasional peek behind the scenes. Nothing spammy. Just the kind of email you actually look forward to opening.
