When women business owners come to work with me, they’re often absolutely exhausted. For years, they’ve tried every idea they can think of to make money – and yet they’re still working every spare minute and STILL broke.

Then after a few weeks of working together, their business starts to turn around. The magic starts to happen. And the differentiating factor? FOCUS.

The Butter Problem

Most of my new clients know they haven’t been focusing. They’ve got several business ideas on the go at once. They’re on every social media platform – Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, Threads – posting sporadically on all of them and doing none of them well.

As entrepreneurs, they spot opportunities around every corner and keep setting up new little “arms” to their business. But what actually happens is they spread themselves so thin – like butter on too much toast – that nothing gets done properly and they make LESS money, not more.

As the proverb goes: chase two rabbits, catch none.

What Focus Actually Looks Like

Focus means picking ONE business and going all in. ONE ideal customer. ONE or two social media platforms. ONE core offer. And doing them brilliantly.

It means saying “I’m going to show up consistently on Instagram, build my email list with Flodesk, and write one blog post a week” – and actually doing it, instead of half-heartedly trying to be everywhere at once.

It means closing down the Etsy shop that makes you £30 a month, stopping the freelance work you hate, and putting all your energy into the thing that has the most potential.

How To Get Focused

Pick your ONE thing. Which part of your business makes you the most money AND brings you the most joy? That’s your focus. Everything else is a distraction.

Pick your platforms. You do NOT need to be on every social media platform. Pick two maximum. For most women in business, Instagram plus email marketing is a powerful combination. Or LinkedIn plus a blog. Choose what works for YOU.

Use tools to streamline. Canva for content creation. Later or Metricool for scheduling. Flodesk for emails. ChatGPT for brainstorming. These tools exist so you can do more with less.

Say no. To shiny new ideas. To “opportunities” that pull you off track. To well-meaning friends who say “you should really be on TikTok.” Unless it serves your focus, it can wait.

You’re not made of butter. Stop trying to spread yourself across everything. Pick your thing, go deep, and watch what happens when you give something 100% instead of giving ten things 10% each.
