Hands up if you spend AGES every week on social media and have nothing to show for it except wasted time and a bit of a headache? You see other businesses apparently making loads of money from Instagram and LinkedIn, and you think – what am I doing wrong?
The good news: it’s not rocket science. There are just a few things you need to know to turn your social media from a time-sucking black hole into a genuine customer-attracting machine.
1. Treat It Like Real Networking
You wouldn’t walk into a networking event and immediately start selling to everyone. You’d introduce yourself, ask about their business, find common ground, and build a relationship first. Social media works exactly the same way. Build trust, give value, and build relationships before you sell.
2. Know What You Want From It
What’s your actual goal? Website traffic? Email subscribers? Direct sales? Bookings? If you don’t know what you want, you can’t create content that leads people there. Every post should have a purpose – even if that purpose is simply “let people get to know me.”
3. Be Consistent, Not Perfect
Posting three times a week, every week, will always beat posting seven times one week and then disappearing for a month. Use Later or Metricool to schedule your posts so you’re not starting from scratch every day. Batch-create your content in Canva. Consistency builds trust – and trust leads to sales.
4. Talk TO Your Ideal Customer, Not AT Everyone
Stop trying to appeal to the masses. Write every post as if you’re talking to one specific person – your Super Customer. Address their specific problems, fears, and desires. When someone reads your post and thinks “it’s like she’s read my mind!” – that’s when the magic happens.
5. Show Up As A Human, Not A Logo
People buy from people. Show your face. Share your stories. Let people see behind the scenes. The posts that get the most engagement are always the personal ones – not the polished, corporate-looking graphics. Be real. Be relatable. Be YOU.
6. Have A Clear Call To Action
Don’t just post and hope. Tell people what to do next. “Click the link in my bio to book.” “DM me ‘READY’ for details.” “Sign up for my free guide – link in Stories.” Make it ridiculously easy for interested people to take the next step. Most people won’t do anything unless you ask them to.
7. Follow Up
If someone comments on your post, reply. If someone DMs you, respond quickly. If someone likes every single one of your posts, reach out and start a conversation. The sale isn’t in the post – it’s in the follow-up. Most businesses leave money on the table by never following up with the people who’ve already shown interest.
Social media isn’t magic – but when you use it strategically, it’s incredibly powerful. Pick the platform where your ideal customers hang out (Instagram, LinkedIn, or TikTok are the big three for most small businesses right now), apply these 7 secrets, and watch what happens. The likes-to-sales gap? It’s smaller than you think.
